Limerick floods: Over 20 families evacuated from their homes

THERE were chaotic scenes in Shannon Banks last night as over 20 families evacuated their homes as the Shannon burst its banks.

"The main problem is that some people are reluctant to leave their homes,"explained Inspector Seamus Gallagher, Henry Street, Garda station, as he and members of the force helped families.

Ambulances, mini-buses, jeeps and army trucks were restricted from entry to the worst affected area, Hampstead at the rear of the estate, by the fact that a crowd of "onlookers" who had come up to view proceedings had parked their cars, obstructing emergency services from getting to the scene.

Everybody was wearing wellies and there were sandbags in front of the doors of all the homes in the area. Numerous children were carried from their homes and brought away to Jury's Inn hotel for the night.
