Limerick farmer jailed in land row appears in court

A County Limerick farmer who has spent six months in prison for contempt of court has once again refused to back down in a long-running land dispute.
Daniel Doherty, of Rathcahill, Templeglantine, appeared before Limerick Circuit Court this Thursday afternoon, where he again refused to set aside his claim to a 40 acre farm near the West Limerick village.
Mr Doherty, 40, was jailed by Judge Carroll Moran in July last year for contempt after he failed to abide by a court ruling over the land, which previously belonged to bachelor farmers Matt and Eddie Roche.
Mr Doherty claimed that the brothers promised the land to him, but as they died without leaving a will it passed to their nieces and nephews.
Speaking in court this Thursday afternoon, Mr Doherty again refused to purge his contempt.
“I’m not going to go against Matt and Eddie’s wishes. They wanted me in there. Since I was a young fella they were telling me ‘this is yours’”.
A large placard stating ‘Land Dispute Jailers Roche’, which the Roche family claimed was fixed to a gate on the farm in January, was produced in court.
Judge Moran said that he had “no choice” but send Mr Roche back to prison immediately.
