Limerick council plot to reuse graves

UNMARKED grave plots - many of which were last dug up over 100 years ago - may be reused in order to save space in cemeteries around County Limerick.

Officials from the county council environment department have been visiting cemeteries around Limerick in recent weeks in order to ascertain if graves - which have no headstone and whose occupants are unknown - could be used again.

A report on the investigations being carried out will be presented to the council in January.

County Councillor Eddie Wade says he asked that the council look into reusing old plots after a large number of his constituents voiced their displeasure at the lack of grave space in their locality.

"It has gotten to a stage where people are saying it to me on a weekly basis," said Cllr Wade. "A resident from Monaleen said it to me only the other day that they would have no option but to buy a plot in Mungret because it's the closest available cemetery. If someone has grown up and raised their family in an area, then they want their final resting place to also be in that area."

Cllr Wade added that he was only asking the council to consider unmarked plots where the history of its occupants is undocumented. Graveyards which the council team have visited already include Raheen, Cahernorry, Inch St Lawrence and Carrigoreilly.

"I'm talking about graves that are 100 and 120 years old and we may be only talking about seven or eight plots per graveyard but every little bit helps. There are cemeteries around Limerick that people don't even know about so if you got a few in each one it could help the situation considerably."
