Limerick communities urged to take part in local services celebration
LIMERICK people are being called on to support the National Community Services Celebration Day by attending a range of activities that are taking place around the county on Friday, September 10.
The Limerick Network for Community Services Programmes is organising local activities as part of the national celebration day, including coffee mornings, information stands, tours of facilities and opportunities to see first hand the services provided by these projects in their local communities.
"Community services projects are local projects delivering vital services and employment opportunities to their local communities," said Elaine Butler of Croom Community Development Association and chairwoman of the Limerick Network.
"Many of them provide services and opportunities that are not available from anyone else. We hope local people will come along and visit the projects where they can learn more about their local CSP and show their support for our work," she added.
With upwards of 420 projects nationwide employing well in excess of 2,700 people, they deliver a huge variety of services for particularly disadvantaged groups in society. .
Examples of the wide range of services that operate nationally under the programme include meals on wheels, home insulation, visitation and home care for the elderly.
"The McCarthy Report and some commentators have suggested the abolition of the Community Services Programme that funds CSPs. There are 18 of these projects in Limerick," Ms Butler pointed out.
These include: Desmond Ability Resource Complex Ltd, Newcastle West; Southill Area Centre; Patrickswell Community Resource House; HoneyFitz Theatre, Lough Gur; Dromcollogher and District Respite Care Centre Ltd; Friars Gate, Kilmallock; Georgian House & Garden Ltd; Mobile IT Ltd; Rural Community Care Network (RCCN Caring Ltd); Northside Learning Hub Ltd; St Munchin's Family Resource Centre; Rural Bus; Knockaderry Resource Centre; Croom Community Hall; Ballyhoura Community Radio; Millennium Centre Caherconlish; Newcastle West and District Community Centre Ltd, and Southside Youth Space.
