Limerick city's Christmas tree to be placed in the River
LIMERICK City is breaking with tradition this year by deciding to locate the city centre's Christmas tree in the middle of the River Shannon.
Officials have confirmed that last year's 'green' Christmas tree, which is made from recycled steel and powered by energy-efficient lights, will be placed in the river at the bottom of Shannon Street.
In another new development, the tree has been increased in height from 15 to 21 metres - making it the tallest Christmas tree in Ireland this year.
Officials expect the tree to be fully assembled and in place in time for Monday night's official switching-on ceremony, where Mayor of
Limerick Cllr John Gilligan and New Zealand rugby superstar Jonah Lomu will turn on the city centre Christmas lights.
The 'green' tree is powered by a low-energy turbine and is made from salvaged steel from major local building projects, including the redevelopment of Thomond Park and the Shannon Tunnel.
It was designed by White Young Greene Consulting Engineers.
