Limerick businesses getting behind the Special Olympics with €1.2m in support offered

LIMERICK businesses are showing their support for the Special Olympics which takes place in Limerick this summer. A leadership council has also been established which is made up of some of Limerick's best-known business leaders who have all pledged their support to the Games.

The 2010 Special Olympics will cost €2.5m to stage and to date over €1.2m worth of support has been secured from companies and other organisations to offset the cost.

There are lots of different ways for organisations to show their support for the Games through donations of cash, value in kind and services.

Special Olympics Ireland CEO Matt English said organisers were well on schedule in terms of planning for the Games, and from now on it will be all about action and making things happen.

"We will need the support of lots of different organisations and individuals to achieve all that we need to, but I know that the people of Limerick will rise to the occasion as so many have done already," Mr English said. "We are so grateful to everyone who has already come on board and would very much welcome the support of anyone else who wishes to get involved."

The Games will take place over four days from Thursday, June 9, to Sunday, June 13. Some 1,900 Special Olympics athletes from throughout Ireland will travel to Limerick to compete in 13 sports. They will be accompanied by 650 coaches and official delegates as well as a contingent of over 4,000 family members.

The Games will be supported by a team of 3,500 volunteers. So far a huge number of people have attended volunteer information sessions and registered to volunteer at the Games. However due to an unprecedented number of calls and requests in the last week Special Olympics Ireland has decided to run two more information sessions for people who want to volunteer for the Games.

The sessions will be the last chance for people to register to volunteer, and will take place at 7pm next Tuesday in Thomond Park and 7pm next Thursday in the South Court Hotel. For further details see www.specialolympics.ie
