Limerick burial spaces running short in city as charges rise; 23,641 plots available in county

THE COST of purchasing a grave in County Limerick is double for those with an address in the city, while cemetery charges are up to twice the price in Limerick City as they are in the county.

The Limerick Leader can reveal there are 23,641 available spaces in the 240 burial grounds in Co. Limerick, while there are just 3,383 remaining spaces in Limerick city.

Prices for a grave in Co Limerick are €585 for a single grave space and €1,170 for a double grave, while non-county residents can expect to pay €1,170 and €2,340 respectively.

Comparatively, prices in Mount Saint Oliver in Limerick City - the only graveyard with available space in the city - have increased this week to €980 for a pre-purchase internal plot and €1,210 for a "near pathway" plot.

The price of opening an adult grave in the city, paid directly to Limerick City Council, was raised this week from €475 to €700.

The practice is sub-contracted in the county with undertakers or the family themselves procuring the service, with costs ranging from €200 to €500.
