Hair-raising and fundraising: Dell Limerick employees get into the spirit of Movember
STAFF on Limerick’s largest industrial estate are sprouting tashers but still keeping trim with a charity run for the Irish Cancer Society at the end of the month.
“Movember” has increasingly provided hundreds of Limerick men the opportunity to disprove the aphorism (almost) penned by Dorothy Parker - “girls seldom make passes at men with moustaches”. And the month of November also affords them the opportunity to raise awareness about men’s health issues in general and prostate cancer in particular.
Dozens of members of staff at companies on Raheen Business Park have been perfecting the pencils and handlebars for some weeks now and many of the would-be “Ronnie” Delaneys are looking to shave seconds off their personal bests in the “Mo Mile” on November 30, gathering at Stryker 2 car park at 1.30pm. Participating companies include Dell, Stryker, Analog, ON Semiconductor, Sercom, Blulift and SPIN SouthWest.
Padraig Healy, site leader at Dell’s Limerick plant said: “as a company Dell are an official supporter of the Irish Cancer Society for their Daffodil Day campaign. Each year our employees surprise us with their enthusiasm and generosity of time and monetary donations”.
“Outside of Daffodil Day, they look to support the Irish Cancer Society’s agenda at other stages of the year. This November is a fun campaign and it’s great to have so many employees enthusiastically growing their facial hair for such a good cause. Having achieved so much for the Movember campaign in 2011, this year we want to make a very special effort to achieve beyond last years’ results and generate greater awareness around men’s health and specifically prostate cancer. The strong support from other companies within the business park around this initiative has been really positive for the campaign,” Mr Healy said.
Dell employees donated over €30,000 for the Movember campaign in 2011 and the Irish Cancer Society has welcomed the contribution of the computer giant and all the Raheen companies getting involved. “Movember is a great month of fundraising and awareness for us and we’re delighted to hear that a Mo Mile has been arranged by Dell in Limerick. I wish everyone the best of luck,” said the ICS’ boss John McCormack.
