Limerick will feature in All Black preview
LIMERICK will feature on prime time TV in New Zealand next month as part of the build-up to Munster's clash with the All Blacks in the redeveloped Thomond Park.
Well-known New Zealand TV presenter Rachel Smalley has been spending time around the city this week with her cameraman Leon Menzies attempting to capture Limerick's rugby history and tradition but also hoping to "dispel some of the myths" surrounding the historic Munster victory 30 years ago.
"There's been lots of rumours flying around New Zealand that the All Blacks were hungover on the day they played in Limerick but the truth is they weren't, they were beaten fair and square by a better Munster team," said Ms Smalley.
"Although New Zealanders know about Munster and are aware that they beat the All Blacks, they don't know a lot about the 1978 game. We intend to report on how special that win was, what it meant to the people of Limerick and the excitement building ahead of the re-match next month."
Among the locals interviewed for the television feature, which will be broadcast on TV3 New Zealand, were Limerick Leader editor and author of 'Stand Up and Fight: When Munster beat the All Blacks', Alan English, Limerick Leader photographer, Owen South and linesman on the day of the match, Martin Walsh.
Ms Smalley also discussed the game with members of the 1978 team, Colm Tucker, Gerry McLoughlin and Seamus Dennison and visited famous Limerick rugby pub Charlie St George's on Parnell Street.
