Limerick solicitor breaks silence over assault
SOLICITOR John Devane today claimed he had been warned he was "a dead man walking" within minutes of his alleged assault by a serious criminal at Limerick Court last Wednesday.
And he confirmed to the Limerick Leader that he had received correspondence from the gardai that they were investigating the incident but Mr Devane said: "I do not see myself making an official complaint in relation to the matter."
"If I make a statement, all that will happen is I will end up being another statistic," he said.
The controversial solicitor was speaking as he came under mounting pressure to make a statement to the gardai. Steve Collins, whose son Roy was shot by gang members in April, joined Mayor Kevin Kiely at the
weekend in urging Mr Devane to do so.
But Mr Devane said that "if I go to the gardai, my security and worst of all, the security of my wife, my two children, my staff, my neighbours, my friends are all put in jeopardy".
"I was told outside the courthouse immediately after the
assault by a person present that if I make a statement to the gardai, I'm a dead man walking,'" he said.
"I don't think it is an issue of credibility. The Mayor said in the Limerick Leader last week I would lose credibility if I didn't
make a statement. I don't agree I will lose credibility. But in any case I care more for the safety of my family and loved ones and I won't be making that statement," the solicitor said.
