Limerick soccer team goes to the dogs with new sponsorship deal

SENIOR soccer in Limerick received a major boost this Thursday with confirmation that Bord na gCon has signed up as the main jersey sponsor of Limerick FC for the remainder of the current season.

As part of the deal, which is worth a five figure sum, the Bord Na gCon logo will appear on the front of the club jersey beginning with this Friday night's Airtricity League match against Derry City at Jackman Park.

Other sponsors who were also confirmed this Thursday are the Panasonic Store, BDO and Copy-Type Printers. A spokesman for Limerick FC confirmed the team would be wearing the new jersey this Friday night and that it will be officially launched early next week.

"We have had terrific support from local businesses and it has been very positive and we have built up a momentum now and I would like to thank all those businesses who have come on board to support us," said Pat O'Sullivan, chairman of Limerick FC.

Orla Strumble, Head of Marketing with Limerick-based Bord na gCon, said the opportunity to sponsor Limerick FC came at the perfect time.

"It is a really good match for us because we are opening the new Greyhound Stadium (at Greenpark) in October and this is a great opportunity for us to do some local sponsorship around that and it will also have a national impact because Limerick FC will be playing in other towns and cities across the country where we have other greyhound stadiums," she said.

Confirmation that Bord na gCon has agreed a sponsorship deal with Limerick FC has boosted hopes that senior soccer in Limerick may return to its spiritual home at the Market's Field.

Negotiations about such a move are ongoing and further meetings are expected to take place in the coming weeks.
