Limerick's Harris statue damaged in attack by vandals
THE statue of Richard Harris on Bedford Row has been seriously damaged by vandals, sparking condemnation from the Mayor and the sculptor.
The sword of the bronze statue, which depicts the actor in his most famous role as King Arthur, has been bent back to almost a 45 degree angle, cracking the edge of the scabbard in the process.
Mayor of Limerick Cllr John Gilligan described the vandals responsible as "uncivilised" and said that they were intent on damaging the appearance of the city centre.
The statue's sculptor Jim Connolly said that he was disappointed to hear that statue had been attacked.
"This is just scandalous. I haven't seen the damage yet, but the fact that it has been vandalised at all is a true shame."
The statue is understood to have been damaged overnight on Tuesday. Gardai have said that they have not yet received a complaint about the vandalism.
