Limerick prison is “not fit for purpose” says report

A REPORT into conditions at Limerick Prison has criticised the facility as being overcrowded, unhygienic and - in certain areas - not fit for purpose.
In his report to the Minister for Justice and Defence Deputy Alan Shatter, the Inspector of Prisons, Judge Michael Reilly says he is deeply concerned by the deficiencies at the Mulgrave Street jail.
The report is based on a number of visits he conducted at the prison during the first nine months of 2011.
Issues of concern include inadequate toilet facilities for prisoners, broken cell windows, broken showers, dirty cells and sewage smells.
In a statement Minister Shatter said he was shocked by the report.
He has called for immediate action to be taken to address failings at the prison and he says he intends to visit the prison shortly to inspect progress in improving the facility.
