Limerick pays a warm tribute to Glenroe star Mick Lally
TRIBUTES have been paid across Limerick to the actor Mick Lally, 64, who died yesterday following a short illness.
The Mayo native was best known for his role in the hugely popular RT drama Glenroe in which he played farmer Miley Byrne.
During his career he also starred in Bracken, Ballykissangel and TG4's Ros Na Rn. Along with Garry Hynes, he was a founder member of the Druid Theatre company which worked closely with many Irish playwrights, most notably Tom Murphy.
His last performance in Limerick was in June of this year when he performed in God's Official at Friar's Gate Theatre in Kilmallock alongside George McMahon (Mondo - Fair City) and rising star Edwin Mullane.
Limerick actor Nigel Mercier, who played Des Brennan in Glenroe, says Mick Lally was hugely popular. "In a lot of ways he was very like Miley but he wasn't the gombeen that he played. My memories of working with him on Glenroe is that he always had his head stuck in a book or in a newspaper and he would just get on with his job. He was a very knowledgeable man, a very clever man and you would have some great conversations with him during lunch and over breaks. He was lovely man and what you saw was what you got," he said.
For the past decade Mick Lally was a patron of the Limerick-based charity Bthar, which provides livestock in development aid.
"We were all very saddened to hear about Mick's death," said Peter Ireton, chief executive of Bthar. I think he was one of the most well-known patrons. Indeed, every year we get letters personally addressed to Mick. We will miss him and we would like to extend our sympathies to Mick's wife Peggie and his three children, Saileog, Darach and Maghnus.
