A LIMERICK city man was being questioned by Gardai in Ennis this Thursday following a dramatic car chase in Clare during which gardai were forced to use pepperspray to subdue the man.
The 31-year-old, who is from the south side of the city, was arrested by garda after they intercepted a stolen Kia Sorento Jeep which crashed in the centre of Ennis at around 4.30pm on Wednesday.
The vehicle was hijacked in Kilrush earlier in the day when the owner was threatened at knifepoint. The 4x4 was pursued by gardai between Kilrush and Ennis and the pursuit continued through the streets of the town.
The vehicle crashed through several concrete bollards and only came to a stop after it collided with a shopfront at Lower Market Street near the town centre. People were forced to jump for cover, and, luckily, no one was injured.
The driver was overpowered by garda, one of whom had to use pepperspray to subdue him. The man, who has a number of previous convictions, was being questioned at Ennis Garda station this Thursday under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
