Limerick man pleads guilty to firearm offences

A MAN who was detained after members of the Emergency Response Unit used a taser gun while arresting him has pleaded guilty to firearms offences at Limerick Circuit Court.

Stephen Fitzgerald, 46, of no fixed abode but who has a number of addresses in Limerick city, pleaded guilty to the unlawful possession of a Glock semi-automatic pistol and 19 rounds of ammunition at Canal Bank, Rhebogue on Thursday, April 10, 2008.

The weapons were seized from Mr Fitzgerald during a pre-planned operation, involving detectives from Limerick supported by members of the Emergency Response Unit.

Following his guilty plea Mr Fitzgerald was remanded in custody by Judge Sean O'Donnabhain pending a sentencing hearing on December 18, next.
