Limerick kids score with their fancy handiwork
SOME Limerick kids dream of showing Giovanni Trapattoni what they can do with their feet, but a group of city kids will showoff their handiwork.
Thanks to the Thomond Park community art project, 16 children will get to meet their hero at an Irish training session in Tipperary on Monday.
They will also bring their pieces of art from the project for the Italian legend to see prior to the friendly with Australia on Wednesday. The children were busy working away a couple of weeks ago when a delegation from the FAI sawtheir work by accident.
"We just happened to be in Thomond Park and saw what they were doing and it was amazing. That's why we wanted to do something for this group because it is so exceptional. So they will all get to meet Trapattoni in St Michael's House in Tipperary and showthem their art," said a spokesman for the FAI.
And the children will be in very good football company, as they are working with professional artists Jon and Sally Phillips of Cardiff-based Pippin's Designs, who have previously worked on similar schemes with Chelsea and Manchester United.
The staff at Thomond Park worked closely with the Limerick Institute of Technology on this project. Gillian Barry, of LIT, said it was a fantastic chance of youngsters to showoff their talents.
"As part of our work with the regeneration areas and environs of Limerick city, Limerick Institute of Technology tied in with Thomond Park's community art project to give deserving children an opportunity to hone their artistic skills. The enthusiasm of Pippin's Designs was contagious and it showed – through the amazing work the children produced in their paintings. This art project has given the children a great sense of achievement, has helped them to recognise their potential and given them a sense of opportunity and LIT are delighted to be part of this," said Ms Barry.
"Thanks to the FAI, the children have this fantastic opportunity to meet Ireland's sporting heroes and showthem the paintings they created," she added. Jon Phillips said he was already looking forward to coming back and doing more projects with Limerick kids.
"The Thomond Park community art project is going to provide thousands of local children over the coming years with the opportunity to create striking works of art based around the rugby, soccer and music events held at this newlandmark venue. The children work at the stadium itself with us and each painting created will be displayed around Thomond Park stadium for the hundreds of thousands of visitors each year to enjoy," said Mr Phillips.
