Limerick hotel is now a refugee hostel
A city centre hotel has been closed due to rising competition in the market and is now being used as a hostel for 125 asylum seekers.
The Limerick Leader exclusively reveals today that Sarsfield Bridge Hotel which is currently "closed for renovations" has been leased by the Department of Justice's Reception and Integration Agency.
The Government confirmed the move to the Leader as news emerged that one of the city's longest established hotel, the Best Western Pery - formerly The Glentworth Hotel - is for sale as a going concern for 8m.
A spokesperson for Kenny's Builders the owner of the hotel on Sarsfield Bridge said the hotel had not been sold, but said a lease was signed last Friday.
In response, Sean Lally, president of Limerick Chamber of Commerce has put the temporary closure of the hotel down to the over-saturation of the market and said he wouldn't be surprised if more hotels in the Limerick area were to close in the coming months.
