Limerick Going for Gold winner to be announced

THE Limerick Going for Gold campaign reaches its conclusion later today with the announcment of the overall winner of the competition.

Supported by the JP McManus charitable foundation, the competition has seen communities from across the city compete against each other over the past two months for a share of the €50,000 prize fund.

Six communities qualified for today’s grand final through a public text-vote while the final four finalists were selected by a panel of local judges.

All ten finalists were recently visited by the judges and their marks will be combined with the results from last week’s Tidy Town competition to select to overall winner.

The prize giving ceremony takes place at City Hall this morning and the final result is expected to be announced just before midday.

The ten communities that have qualified for the grand final of the Limerick Going for Gold competition are: Spring Grove, Mount Gerard Court, Castletroy View, Delmege Park, Janesboro, Caherdavin, Annacotty, Carabullawn, Garryowen and Woodlawn Park.

Meanwhile the finalists in the “other groups” category are: Abundant Life, Clareview, Glantan, Gouldavoher, Log na gCapall, Limerick Civic Trust, Meadowbrook, Monaleen Park, Presentation Primary School, St Joseph’s Place and St Vincent Care Centre, Lisnagry.

Separately, Dermot Lynch (Lower Careys Road), Kate Hanrahan (Ashbourne Park, Courtbrack Avenue) and Michael Meagher (Walnut Court, Kennedy Park) are the finalists in the garden competition, which is sponsored by the Parkway Shopping Centre.

The finalists in the Individual Merit Award category are: Michael McNamara, Annacotty; Eileen Costello, Carraballawn; Rachael Rice, Janesboro; Rose Ryan, Moyross; Eugene Ryan, Carn na Ree; Lee Casey, O’Malley Park; Johnny Gardiner, Our Lady of Lourdes; Ita O’Sullivan, Southville / Gurteen; Seamus Woods and George Carroll, Woodlawn Park.
