Limerick feud gun attack in St Mary's Park

THE highly publicised arrival of the armed Garda Emergency Response Unit to Limerick city has not deterred rival gangs trying to kill each other with another shooting incident over the weekend.

Garda in Henry Street have said that the shooting incident in St Mary's Park, which saw the front door of a house shot at on Saturday night, may be feud related. The house is believed to have been occupied at the time but nobody was injured in the shooting.

The ERU took up duty in some of Limerick's main feud flashpoints, including St Mary's Park, Moyross, Southill and Ballinacurra Weston, over the weekend.

The decision was made following a request from garda management in the city who fear there could be a major escalation of feud-related activity.

Last week an elderly woman was lucky to escape death or serious injury when more than 15 shots were fired at six houses in the St Mary's Park estate during a drive-by shooting. "She was just sitting inside watching tv when a bullet flew past her head and lodged in a wall," said a garda source.

Speaking after he met with Justice Minister, Brian Lenihan, Commissioner Fachtna Murphy said: "What I am doing right now is I am asking a unit of the Emergency Response Unit to come here to Limerick in the next few days to take up duty here to augment the armed patrols that are already in place."

Commissioner Murphy said the ERU would be deployed in "known trouble spots" and he said their presence would be reviewed on an ongoing basis by local garda management.

Gardai have said inquiries into the latest shooting in St Mary's Park are ongoing.
