Limerick escort can't wait to meet his Rose

A CLARE butcher is looking forward to escorting one of the beautiful Roses at the International Rose of Tralee when he represents Limerick at the festival which gets underway next week.

Adam Craughan, of Craughan's Butchers at the Westbury Centre told the Limerick Leader he has embarked on a strenuous training regime in preparation for the big event.

The former UL student also took part in a gruelling boot camp in June with the other escorts, engaging in rigorous team-building and discipline exercises.

"I have a very strict training regime at the moment, lots of running, healthy eating and early nights," he laughed.

Adam will not find out which Rose he will be escorting in Tralee until Friday, August 20, when the escorts will be introduced to their Roses at the Carlton Castletroy Park in Limerick enroute to Kerry.

"I'd be delighted to escort any of them," he replied diplomatically when asked which of the Roses from across Ireland and the world he would most like to escort.

Having heard about the tales and escapades of previous escorts, Adam said he is really looking forward to his trip to Tralee.

"Absolutely, I can't wait for it. It's going to be a great experience.

"Our duties are to ensure the Roses have an enjoyable experience, to promote the festival and have a good time ourselves."

His parents, Brid Kennedy and Louis Craughan, and siblings Daniel and Fiona will be glued to their TV screens in the hope of spotting Adam amongst the black tie brigade at the front of the dome.

"They are delighted for me and they are looking forward to seeing me on the TV down in Tralee," he said.

The Craughan family have been feeding Limerick and Clare families for years through their butcher businesses on Little Catherine Street, Ennis Road, Clancy's near Parteen, and Adam's own business at the Westbury Centre.

Adam's duties began last weekend when he held a fundraiser for the festival's chosen charity this year, 1Life Suicide helpline. Family and friends attended the event at Nancy Blakes in Limerick. Special guest on the night was Limerick's Golden Jubilee Rose Brid Richardson and the Boston Rose Deirdre Keane.

"We were asked to help out with this charity and as a group the guys have been organising fundraising events around the country for the last few days."
