Limerick elephant bound for Dublin Zoo
CRECORA may not be known as a common grazing ground for elephants, but wildlife fans have until this Monday to see the resident 'Dumbo' at Stone Age Stonemasons, before it leaves to join its cousins in Dublin.
Visitors to a new elephant enclosure at Dublin Zoo are guaranteed to get a hoot out of a special gift which has been presented by Stone Age to mark the opening of the new African plain this March.
The elephant sculpture, which weighs several tonnes, is over two metres in length and just under two metres in height, has been in Stone Age's centre for several years but its owners felt it would be more at home in the new enclosure.
"We had him here for advertising for a few years and when we heard about the new African plain in Dublin Zoo for the elephants, we thought it might be a nice idea to present them with our own," explained PJ Hennessy, manager at Stone Age.
The stone elephant will be transported by truck to Dublin Zoo this Monday before being lifted carefully off using a forklift.
PJ says when the gates open on the new African plain next March, all of the visitors are guaranteed to see Crecora's elephant on their way in.
"They're going to have a grand opening on St Patrick's Day," he said. "We've been told that he's going to be at the front entrance for it, I've no doubt he'll be a hit."
