Limerick councillors claim raw sewerage is going into rivers

“IT is not acceptable that we have raw sewerage going into the river Deel,” Cllr Kevin Sheahan said when he called on the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government to make funds available immediately to replace or upgrade the sewerage plant in Askeaton.
Because the system in Askeaton is a single-pipe system, the storm water and sewerage sytems are connected, Cllr Sheahan explained. During the recent heavy rain, this resulted in man-hole covers popping up and raw sewerage mixing with surface water going into the Deel.
“It is close to criminal negligence,” he said, and was not fair on the community, which had been included in several schemes but none had happened.
Seconding the motion, Cllr John Sheahan described the system in Glin as a tank with a sluice gate where “dilution was the best solution to pollution”.
Cllr Liam Galvin queried how the council was able to get away with this while septic tank owners were being told to bring their tanks up to standard.
