Limerick City Manager to retire next month

LIMERICK City manager Tom Mackey is to retire next month after nine years service, it has emerged.
With Limerick City Council and Limerick County Council set to merge in 2014, Mr Mackey had been set to retire next year.
The impending retirement of county manager Ned Gleeson is set to pave the way for the appointement of a new manager to run the new joint authority.
Following a meeting with city councillors on Friday, Mr Mackey confirmed his intention to stand down on February 28 next.
Local Government Minister Phil Hogan paid tribute to Mr Mackey, saying he “has understood the situation and understood perfectly as a professional public servant the government decision on merging the two authorities, and ultimately the need to have a management system in place that would work for the next nine or ten years implementing the project.”
Mr Hogan added he feels Mr Mackey has done the “most honourable thing” in standing down to allow the amalgamation project continue.
