Limerick city councillors to discuss anti-social behaviour in estates
PROBLEMS with antisocial behaviour at a number of city housing estates are expected to be discussed this evening at a meeting of the city council's Social and Housing Special Policy Committee. One of the items on the agenda of the meeting, which is the first since the summer break, is an update on the local authority's "Antisocial Behaviour Strategy."
In particular, ongoing concerns over the behaviour of a number of families at Fairview Crescent, Garryowen are expected to be raised by members of the committee. Since the beginning of this year a third of the families living in the estate have moved out because of intimidation and violence.
Kieran Lehane, director of housing at City Hall, said one person is already the subject of a court order excluding him from the Fairview Crescent area and he said the local authority is treating the concerns of residents seriously.
"The council is fully aware of the issue at Fairview Crescent, we have been informed directly by the residents and there have been strong representations made to us from members of the council and TDs," he said.
Legal proceedings have been initiated against members of another family living in the estate and that case is expected to come before the courts in the near future.
Mr Lehane confirmed that "other options" are being considered in relation to another family living in the same area. Limerick City Council employs four full-time tenancy officers who deal with more than 250 complaints a year in relation to anti-social behaviour.
"Altogether this year we have issued eight verbal warnings and we have issued written warnings to 15 people across the city," said Kieran Lehane who added that the local authority has served notices to quit on four of its tenants since January.
In the wake of recent developments at Fairview Crescent a number of politicians have called for a review of council's housing policy.
