Jesuit head to celebrate order's 150 years of education in the city

THE head of the Jesuit order is to lead the celebrations later this week when Crescent College marks 150 years of education in Limerick.

Fr Adolfo Nicols, superior general of the Jesuits worldwide, will say a ceremonial Mass at the Dooradoyle school next Friday when he visits Limerick during his first ever trip to Ireland.

He will also meet students, parents and teachers, and is to be presented with a book commemorating the sesquicentennial anniversary of Jesuit teaching in Limerick.

Fr Nicols' five-day visit to Ireland will also see him attend events in Dublin and Belfast.

A spokesperson for the Irish branch of the Jesuit order said that they were "delighted" that Fr Nicols will have the opportunity to lead the tributes to the order's history of education in Limerick.

Nicholas Cuddihy, principal of Crescent College Comprehensive, said that "it is a great honour for the school to welcome Fr General and distinguished guests from other Jesuit schools, the board of management and other representatives, as well as Jesuit fathers and those connected with Crescent College from all over the country."

Fr Nicols will arrive in the school after 10am, and will meet teachers and the board of management ahead of the main anniversary Mass at 11am.

Afterward, he will meet with representatives of the parents council and senior pupils, and will hold a question and answer session on the topics of education, faith and the Jesuit order.

He will then be presented with a copy of a book detailing the school's 150 years in Limerick, from its days in the Crescent to its more recent history in Dooradoyle.

Fr Nicols is then scheduled to meet representatives from the Jesuit refugee centre in Limerick, before returning to Dublin to for a series of meetings with Irish Jesuit benefactors.
