A SOUTHILL man who attacked several people while “prowling” the city centre late at night has been sentenced to a total of four years in prison.

Tony Kelly, 21, of O’Malley Park, Southill pleaded guilty at Limerick Circuit Court to charges of assault, robbery and theft.

During a sentencing hearing, Judge Carroll Moran was told the most serious of the offences happened in the early hours of May 14, 2011.

Det Garda Fergal Hanrahan said the defendant “accosted” a man near the Pery Hotel on Glenthworth Street at around 2.50am.

When the man resisted Kelly’s attempts to take money from his pocket, the defendant slashed him in the face with a knife.

The victim, who was aged 21 at the time of the incident, sustained permanent scarring to the left side of his face.

“He sustained a serious laceration under the eye,” said John O’Sullivan BL, prosecuting.

Kelly, who is a son of Southill man Anthony Kelly, pleaded guilty to stealing money from a French tourist earlier on the same night and he also admitted robbing €50 off another man at a flat on Catherine Street the previous night.

Det Garda Hanrahan agreed with Mr O’Sullivan that Kelly hadbehaved “in a predatory and out of control fashion” on the night and he told the court that all the incidents were unprovoked.

Brian McInerney BL, said the case against his client was circumstantial and that his guilty plea was an important aspect of the case.

He said Kelly was “out of control after taking a cocktail of tablets” and he said he had suffered a personal tragedy around the time of the offences. “His behaviour was bizarre” he said.

Judge Carroll Moran said it was aggravating factor that Kelly had “gone on a rampage picking his victims at random.”

The judge imposed a two year prison sentence which he ordered should be served consecutively to a separate two year suspended sentence, which he activated.
