Jack Bourke is ashamed of A&E treatment at Limerick's biggest hospital

FORMER Health Board chairman Jack Bourke says he is "ashamed" at how people are being treated in the Limerick Regional Hospital and "ashamed" that his name is on plaques all over the building.

And nurses at the hospital say that services at the Regional are now akin to a "Fawlty Towers" approach to healthcare management.

Mr Bourke was speaking from the A&E department as he consoled his wife

Monica, who was rushed to the hospital on Monday morning after having a

stroke and was still lying on a trolley 24 hours later.

"There is a lot of anger out here. Nobody is happy and I am very upset. I do not understand why you have a packed A&E department with people tripping over themselves with extra nurses brought down to look after the people, instead of just opening a ward," said the three times

former Mayor, whose wife is in her mid 70's.

"I am not just talking about my wife; I am talking about how so many people here are on trolleys, while they are closing down wards. It makes no sense," said Cllr Bourke, the former Fianna Fail councillors,

who for 20 years was chairman of the Mid Western Heath Board.

Meanwhile the HSE has rejected claims by the Irish Nurses and Midwives Association that there were 45 people waiting to be admitted to A&E on Tuesday morning.
