Investigations continue after Limerickman's body is found on riverbed
FURTHER garda investigations into the death of Limerickman Francis Greene are continuing, after his body was found on a riverbed in Co Clare over the weekend.
The cause of his death is expected to be established this Monday when full post-mortem results should become available to gardai.
It is understood a farmer discovered the body of the 47 year-old in the mudflats of the Shannon at Portrine, Cratloe, Co Clare, on Friday afternoon last.
Mr Greene, who would have been 48-years-old on Thursday, went missing from his city centre flat on Hartstonge Street on Saturday, November 28 last.
Following his disappearance, investigating detectives viewed several hundreds hours of CCTV footage from Limerick city, and a number of searches have taken place in and around the River Shannon.
The Shannon-based coastguard helicopter assisted in the search operations, as did garda divers. House-to-house enquiries were also conducted around where Mr Greene had been living in an effort to trace his last movements.
Garda are investigating whether the single unemployed man was forcibly taken from his basement apartment.
Last month a 27-year-old man was questioned about the suspected false imprisonment of Mr Greene. He was later released without charge and a file on the matter was being prepared for the DPP.
Preliminary post-mortem results by deputy State pathologist Dr. Khalid Jabbar .have been given to the investigating team at Henry Street station. The remains were badly decomposed having been in the water for some time.
Mr Greene's body was initially brought to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Dooradoyle but later transferred to the Midlands Regional Hospital in Portlaoise for further examinations.
In a statement issued following his disappearance, his family said: "We, his family, are in great distress and worry, waiting each day for news, hoping and praying that Frank will be found."
Anyone with information is asked to contact gardai at Henry Street on 061-212400.
Robert O'Dea, chairman of Kilteely Community Council, said his sympathies are with Mr Greene's father, mother and brothers at this difficult time.
Mr O'Dea said Francie was very much part of the Kilteely/Dromkeen parish, a small close-knit community, and "was in everyone's mind since he disappeared."
While he said the discovery of the body brings some closure, he said it is a very sad occasion for all his family and the community, who are deeply saddened by his death.
The family were originally from Ballinlough, but Mr Greene attended Kilteely primary school and was very active in football, hurling and soccer during his youth.
