Heartbroken friends leave floral tributes to Limerick's Hazel
TIED with pink and red ribbons, over a dozen bouquets have been placed on Sarsfield Bridge in tribute to 17-year-old Hazel Shannon.
Hazel's body was recovered from the River Shannon this Wednesday. Friends of the young woman left heartbreaking messages saying she would never be forgotten, and would always be in their hearts.
A single bunch of flowers was tied to one of the pillars on the bridge earlier this week, but tributes have been growing steadily throughout the week.
Ms Shannon, from Fairview Crescent, Garryowen, was reported missing last Saturday. She had not been seen since 2.41am, having been out with friends, and was last seen walking near Sarsfield Bridge in the direction of Ennis Road on CCTV footage obtained by Gardai.
Intensive searches of the river had been carried out by Limerick Marine Search and Rescue, with assistance from the Bunratty branch, and the Civil Defence, for three days.
Her body was recovered on Wednesday at 10.40am near Shannon Bridge. A day earlier her mother, Eileen, had made an emotional appeal on local radio for anyone with information to come forward. Gardai at Henry Street station are treating the death as a tragic incident.
Ms Shannon is survived by her parents, Eileen and Christopher; sisters Dinnika and Ruby; grandparents, Tom and Nancy, and extended family. Herremoval from Cross's Funeral Home will take place this Sunday at 6pm, to St John's Cathedral, where Requiem Mass will be said at 11am on Monday, with burial afterwards in Mount St Oliver cemetery.
