THE head of the Limerick garda division says it will take several months before vacancies at inspector level within the force in Limerick city will be filled.

Chief Supt David Sheahan made his comments after it was confirmed by the Garda Commissioner, Marin Callinan, that Det Insp Jim Ryan and Insp Derek Smart have been promoted to the rank of superintendent.

Det Insp Ryan, who is currently attached to Henry Street Garda Station will be stationed at Castlerea Garda Station in County Roscommon while Supt Smart will move from Roxboro Garda Station to Clonakilty in West Cork.

“First and foremost I would like to congratulate both det insp Jim Ryan and also InspDerek Smart on their appointments as superintendents. It is a great achievement for them and for their families and unfortunately Castlerea and Clonakilty’s gain is our loss,” said Chief Supt Sheahan.

The newly promoted superintendents will take up their new roles next week but according to Chief Supt Sheahan they will not be replaced for several months.

“They will be replaced but it will take time because there is currently no competition available for that rank and that process is about to commence and we will see them replaced but it will take a couple of months before that happens.”

Well, ChuckyD you seem to have nailed it. I am a Limerick man living in the U.S. as well and I have also lived all over this country from rural to big city and stupid anti social behaviour would, as you know, land one in jail faster than anything. The Limerick City skells would last zero time here; they would be a joke here; just small time jerks laughed at by the cops who would lock them up in a nanosecond!

I am currently visiting from the US, having travelled all over the world, residing in several major cities. I have never observed a police department as useless as the gardai. Walk the streets of Limerick at any hour of the day and they are no-where to be seen. CCTV policing was tried in New York in the early nineties and was quickly deemed to be inadequate. NY subsequently is flooded with uniformed officers on street corners every few blocks, backed up with very visible mobile patrols. I presently live in a city in northern California about the size of Limerick. Two weeks ago, nine people from out of town were arrested on a Saturday night for 'unruly behavior'. On monday morning the police chief was hauled in to an emergency city council meeting to explain how the situation had escalated to arrests, where were the cops to prevent this. It would appear that the members of the gardai only want to be involved in what is perceived by them as a cushysafe number, the Traffic Corps'.
