Handball court facelift is right up group's alley

EFFORTS to reopen the handball alley in Abbeyfeale gained momentum last Friday thanks to a welcome dose of local volunteer spirit.

Residents of Mount Trenchard in Foynes marked Ireland's National Day of Volunteering by adding a coat of paint to the hall.

A resurgence in interest to have the alley reopened has led to the former committee joining forces with West Limerick Resources, Abbeyfeale Community Development Project, Foroige and others to organise volunteer workers for the project.

Last Friday, which was known as Give it Swirl Day, saw volunteer groups giving their time and energy to community projects in their area.

Paul Moriarty, a volunteer support worker with WLR, said that the Mount Trenchard residents made a real difference to the project. "This group took part in a similar in initiative in Kilfinny earlier this summer and enjoyed it so much that they wanted to do it all over again. Their helping hands, along with the generous donation of supplies from local businesses, will save the organisers of the handball club a lot of time and money that can now be invested elsewhere in relaunching the facility," he said.

Ed O'Connor of the local CDP worked closely with Paul and Linda Hassett from Foroige to organise last Friday's event.

Sheehy's hardware donated the paint, Feale Valley Plant Hire provided scaffolding, rollers, brushes and other painting equipment were provided by local contractor Ken Hassett, while the handball alley committee volunteered to provide food and tea for the workers.

Following on from last Friday, a local men's group which hopes to use the facility will volunteer their time to paint the dressing rooms. Scanlon Flooring and Decor on Main Street has already offered to provide paint and equipment.

When the alley is finally completed, new balls, goggles and gloves will be provided by County Limerick Local Sports Partnership. The hall will be maintained by the GAA-sponsored FAS scheme in Abbeyfeale.
