Griffin to stand for Sinn Fein in election
SINN Fein's prospects of picking up a city council seat in the upcoming local elections have received a boost with the news that former Alderman Sean Griffin is to stand for the party in the new Limerick City South ward.
Mr Griffin had been widely expected to run as an independent, but has now confirmed that he will join Maurice Quinlivan and Tom Collopy on Sinn Fein's local election ticket. Mr Griffin sat on the council as an independent between 1991 and 1999, and served as a housing and environment committee chairman.
He told the Limerick Leader that standing as a party candidate for the first time was going to be a challenge, but one that he will "relish".
"A lot of Sinn Fein's policies would be very very close to my own positions. Their environmental policy in particular is something I appreciate. They are very much into protecting areas for wildlife. Running as an independent is always a bit difficult, so I'm looking forward to having party support this time. It's the first time Sinn Fein have had three candidates in Limerick City, so we'll have to see how we perform come the elections."
Mr Griffin is a member of the Limerick Environmental Awareness Group and has been a strong advocate of green issues locally.
