Gardai to fight against drugs in West Limerick in 2010

GARDAI intend to make the fight against drugs in West Limerick one of the main objectives of their policing strategy for 2010, the Superintendent of the Newcastle West Garda Division has revealed.

Supt Jim O'Connor said that there had been 27 drugs offences in the division so far in 2009, mostly cases of possession for personal use.

However, he admitted that this only scratches the surface of the drug problem in West Limerick.

"This does not reflect the full scale of the problem, it is only what we've caught. In my policing strategy for next year I intend to push more into drug enforcement. Drug detection is a massive

issue," he told a local area meeting of Limerick County Council in Newcastle West, in which he released details of crime in the local area between January 1 and October 5.

Councillors present at the meeting backed this intention to push harder into drugs enforcement, with Cllr Patrick O'Donovan describing many drug dealers as people "with no visible sign of income, but who live and expensive lifestyle while they destroy the lives of young people in communities and families".

Supt O'Connor also confirmed that every Garda in Newcastle West will be on duty on Halloween night this year in an effort to curb anti-social behaviour and other disturbances.
