Gardai recover weapon after city murder

DETECTIVES investigating the murder of retired Army Corporal Stephen O'Grady this Thursday recovered a blood-stained knife in an area of wasteland adjacent to his home at Lenihan Avenue in Prospect.

Mr O'Grady, 45, who retired from the Defence Forces in 2001, sustained serious injuries to his upper body during a row at his home at around 2am and he died at the Mid Western Regional Hospital a short-time later.

It is understood that a number of people were in the house at that time and that Mr O'Grady knew his attacker.

A 25-year-old man was arrested by gardai shortly before 7am this Thursday morning after he presented himself at Roxboro Garda station.

He was being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act this Thursday.

Gardai also confirmed they had requested the assistance of the State Pathologist and members of the Garda Technical Bureau.

Shortly before 11am as forensic experts were carrying out examinations inside the house where Mr O'Grady was attacked, detectives uncovered a four inch-knife, which they believe was the murder weapon.

Residents who live in Lenihan Avenue, which is just yards from the busy Hyde Road, were reluctant to speak to reporters but one man told the Limerick Leader: "It is just awful what has happened it is just awful, what is world coming to?"

Former colleagues of Mr O'Grady, who had been based at Sarsfield Barracks for over 20 years were said to have been "deeply shocked and upset" when they heard about his death this Thursday morning.
