Garda Ombudsman launches investigation after man dies in shooting incident

THE Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission has launched an investigation into the circumstances of a shooting incident in Newport, Co Tipperary during which a man died.

The incident happened shortly before 8pm near the GAA pitch in the town.

It is understood a number of shots were discharged at unarmed gardai, who were operating a routine checkpoint, during the incident.

A spokesman for the Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission confirmed it has launched investigation into the shooting incident after the matter was referred to it by the Garda Commissioner, Martin Callanan, under Section 102 of the Garda Siochana Act.

The scene of the shooting has been preserved pending the arrival of an investigation team.
