Foul play is not ruled out in death of 92-year-old Limerick man
GARDAI investigating the death of 92-year-old James Mulqueen at his home in Kilcolman last Friday have still not ruled out foul play.
But neither at this stage, are they treating the investigation as one of murder or manslaughter.
An incident-room has been opened at Rathkeale Garda Station and a high-level case conference to examine all the known facts and the results of enquiries to date was held this Wednesday.
Speaking to the Limerick Leader following the conference, Supt Joe Roe –who is leading the investigation – said: "As a result of the post mortem and from our own investigations we are treating Mr Mulqueen's death as suspicious. We have a lot of work done. The investigation is ongoing and we have a full incident room set up."
Supt Roe said that for "operational reasons" he would not comment on reports that the post mortem had revealed marks on Mr Mulqueen's body.
Mr Mulqueen's body was discovered at his home in Ballymakeera, Kilcolman. about 11am last Friday when neighbours noticed he had not left home to collect his pension.
The gardai initially considered Mr Mulqueen's death was due to natural causes but, following a post-mortem on the body which revealed some broken bones, it was decided to treat the death as suspicious.
Door-to-door enquiries were carried out and Garda forensic experts carried out an examination of the house. No evidence of a forced entry was found but there was some evidence that the interior of the two-bedroomed cottage had been disturbed.
However Supt Roe said that there was no evidence of any property stolen.
Gardai have appealed to people who might have noticed any unusual activity in the area to come forward in confidence.
