Fit for a king: Desmond Castle office space for rent

BUSINESS people in Newcastle West have been given the chance to purchase a slice of local history after a section of the Desmond Castle converted into office space was put on the market.

Up until now the three-storey, 120-square metre property facing on to the River Arra to the rear of the castle has been used as an architect's studio. However, it has now been put up for sale and is being marketed as a potential retail or professional space, with a guide price of j290,000.

Colm O'Donovan of agents Sherry FitzGerald said that the property was already beginning to attract interest.

"It has a distinct and interesting history as part of the Desmond Castle, and is something of a landmark in the town. It's in a lovely location, right on the riverbank, and while it's been used as a studio and office space up until now we think that it has real potential to be developed for retail too," he said.

The building, which is known as "Fuller's Folly", was built on the site after it was leased by local businessman William Fuller Harnett from the Earl of Devon in 1867. The term folly commonly came to refer to a building of great cost but little practical use and it is understood that Harnett built it at a cost of 1 per stone, crippling him financially. The space was redeveloped into a modern office building, with large gothic style windows and three floors of flexible space.
