Fire in Limerick city centre sees two people rescued and treated for smoke inhalation
THREE UNITS of Limerick Fire Service were this morning called to an incident in a house in Limerick city centre, which saw the residents of the building evacuated and two further residents dramatically rescued by fire officers.
One of the residents of the building was a woman with a 12-month old baby and her partner. A man and a woman required rescue by units of the fire service wearing breathing apparatus, and were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.
Further injury was not reported, and neither required hospitalisation.
The fire took place at No.1 Catherine Place - the corner of Mallow Street and Catherine Place - shortly after 8.30am this morning.
"We had a fire in the basement and we had to search through the building to make sure there was nobody trapped," said Pat Connolly, station chief with Limerick Fire Service, speaking to the Limerick Leader at the scene.
"Two more teams went through the building and they took two people out that had received some smoke inhalation. The fire seems to have been in a basement apartment, around a bed and sofa area."
Some of the residents who spoke to the Leader said they had been in bed and woke up to their apartments filled with smoke.
One young man, whose apartment it was the fire began in, said he wasn't in the house when the fire started.
"I'm not sure (what happened), I only just arrived here and there was ambulances and fire brigade," said Ian Murrihy.
"All of my clothes and cds were in there. I only moved in two weeks last Friday - I've nowhere to really stay now, so I've to find another place to stay."
Gardai from Roxboro are investigating the cause of the fire.
