Family evicted from house in Limerick housing estate

AN eviction took place yesterday in the estate of Fairview Crescent in Garryowen, the second repossession order carried out by Limerick City Council in an estate troubled by anti-social behaviour.

Gardai accompanied the official carrying out the court order repossession in Fairview Crescent this Tuesday. It was served on a woman who had lived in the house for more than ten years.

The woman had a number of children and had previously lived at addresses in the city. She moved into the house in 2001.

A court order was issued in July of last year to repossess the house, but a stay of six months was put on it. The order was granted for anti-social behaviour reasons.

A special meeting of Limerick City Council was recently told that up to 20 people had to flee from the estate after being the subject of intimidation.

This is the second eviction to take place in the estate, and Kieran Lehane, director of housing with the Council, who has just been appointed the new city manager, said that there were no further repossession orders pending.

“There has been an issue in relation to anti social behaviour in that estate,” he explained.

“The tenancy enforcement unit received complaints of anti-social behaviour and we try as much as possible to resolve those through dialogue, mediation and reconciliation between people, if we can at all. But if all of that fails, there are legal remedies available to the council.”

The house was secured after the eviction to prevent burglaries and damage to it. CCTV cameras have been installed in the area, which are being monitored by gardai.

Mr Lehane said that it was “still a matter of concern” to the council that residents had felt forced to leave the estate because of anti-social behaviour in Fairview Crescent.

He added that the repossession was carried out peacefully and stressed this action was a “last resort” for the council.

Limerick City has been mismanaged for decades- especially with regard to housing. It seems that scumbags get preferential treatment every time! Now, why is this? No wonder every illiterate neanderthal behaves like he is a major crime lord; and that visitors (and industry) avoid Limerick like the black death!

We need to evict the slobs from the office of Limerick CC, and replace them with ballsy people who will face down and evict the scum from every estate and let them fend for themselves. Most of the scum will quickly rent private property rather than sleep on the street. They have the money for this when pushed. I am sick of our taxes being used to feed, dress and house scum in this city. Jesus every time they breed, we are left with a bill. Sterlise them, and move them out. It should take 3 months tops to process them, not friggin 5 to 10 years. The housing authority are just over paid cowards, hiding behind their clipboards

I bet the new development in Cliona Park will be filled with anti-social people. It's a bloody waste of six mllion if their going to house low lifes there. Limerick City Council is a bloody joke. I heard recently, a woman whose son was of anti-social behavior got relocated from a disadvantage area to a working class area. Now tell me how the hell did that happen? if there's a so called background check before being housed. It's a load of BS. I agree that the council are intimidated by the scum of this city. It's the only explanation as to why they are housing them and refuse to evict the majority of them who are making peoples lives miserable.

I had to flee my home a year and a half ago because of neighbours from hell. The city council dont look after people like me. Im staying with relatives and i have children, i was told to go to a homeless unit by a city housing officer,, its so unfair. I THINK THE COUNCIL ARE AFRAID OF THESE TYPE OF PEOPLE,You cant rent a private house because the majority of landlords wont accept rent allowance., or the properties are too expensive.
