Eurospar to takeover Moyross SuperValu
UP to 40 jobs in Moyross appear to have been saved with the news Eurospar is to take over the supermarket at Watch House Cross.
It is understood a deal was struck last week for Spar to take on the SuperValu outlets at Watch House Cross and in Newmarket-on-Fergus.
Fears had been expressed that Moyross was about to lose its only shop, which also houses the post office that was controversially relocated from Ballynanty.
Speculation that Lidl or Aldi might be interested in taking over the supermarket as a going concern proved wide of the mark but Spar now appears to have saved the day.
"Nothing is confirmed but all the indications I got over the weekend were very positive," said a "delighted" Mayor Kevin Kiely this Monday.
"It provides a lot of employment to mostly local people and it is a very important community facility with the post office. It's great news that there will continue to be a shop in Moyross. Moyross needs more facilities and couldn't afford to lose its supermarket," said the mayor.
Northside councillor Maurice Quinlivan also welcomed the news this week, saying:
"Many local people were very concerned that jobs were going to be lost and a much-needed local service taken from the communities of Moyross, Ballynanty and Kileely. There was particular concern at the future of the post office which was controversially relocated against the wishes of local Ballynanty people to the Watch House Cross."
"Hopefully now most of the jobs will be retained and services will continue as normal. This is welcome news for this entire area of the northside. I am very pleased especially for the many local workers who now at least for the short-term future have their jobs secure and don't have to join with the 21,000 people in Limerick signing on the live register. I would also like wish the new owners well and hope they have every success with this venture," Cllr Quinlivan said.
Eurospar was contacted for comment this Monday morning but had not responded by the time of going to press.
