ERU to be deployed in Limerick
THE Garda Commisioner, Fachtna Murphy, has announced that members of the Emergency Response Unit will be deployed in Limerick in the coming days.
The announcement was made following a meeting at Roxboro Garda Station during which Commissioner Murphy briefed Justice Minister, Brian Lenihan, and Defence Minister, Willie O'Dea, about the situation in Limerick.
It follows a shooting incident on Tuesday night during which six houses were damaged in the St Mary's Park area of the city.
Following the meeting Commissioner Murphy said: "What I am doing right now is I am asking a unit of the Emergency Response Unit to come here to Limerick in the next few days to take up duty here to augment the armed patrols that are already in place."
He said the ERU would be deployed in "known trouble spots" and he said their presence would be reviewed by local garda management.
Earlier, Minister Lenihan described the situation in Limerick as a "tinderbox ready to explode" due to the availability of weapons amongst criminal elements.
