Eight people arrested by Limerick gardai in massive murder operation

GARDAI investigating the murder of Lee Slattery last May arrested eight people this Tuesday as part of the massive investigation, which is continuing.

The body of the 24-year-old from Ballynanty was discovered in a shallow grave at Knockalisheen Road near Moyross on May 31 last.

The father of one was reported missing by his family and he was last seen alive at around midnight on Thursday May 27.

Post-mortem results showed he died after he was shot three times, including once in the head. Gardai believe he may have been killed over a small drugs debt and his killing featured on RT's Crimecall call programme a month after his death.

A handgun was found near where his body was discovered but gardai have not said if it was the murder weapon for "operational reasons".

Three men and two women were arrested in June on suspicion of withholding information from gardai. They were later released without charge and a file was prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

This Tuesday gardai arrested a five men and three woman in a pre-planned operation. The operation, which began at around 7am, was carried out by uniformed gardai and detectives from Limerick who were supported by members of the armed Regional Support Unit and members of the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

Those arrested range in age from their mid teens to their early forties and they are being questioned at a number of garda stations in Limerick and Clare.

According to the Garda Press Office five of those arrested are being detained under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act and three are being detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

A garda spokesman said: "The investigation is continuing and anyone with information is asked to contact Mayorstone Garda Station on 061 456980, the Garda confidential line at 1800-666-111, or any garda station."
