Early reaction to the publication of the Limerick Local Government report

THE report into how local government operates in Limerick, produced by a committee chaired by businessman Denis Brosnan, has had a mixed response so far.

At a press conference held in the Strand Hotel this Thursday, Clare county councillor Cathal Crowe railed at Mr Brosnan over the recommendation that the suburbs of Westbury and Shannon Banks, currently ruled by Clare County Council, should come under the auspices of a new, enlarged Limerick County Council.

However, the report has been welcomed by Limerick County Council, which had provided a submission calling for a single authority.

Limerick City Council, which had wanted a boundary extension into the county and parts of south-east Clare, has yet to issue an official response.

Limerick County Council reaction

Limerick County Council today welcomed the publication of the Report of the Limerick Local Government Committee on the most appropriate arrangements for Local Government for Limerick City and County.

The most important issue at the centre of this debate has been the betterment of the people of Limerick City and County, which has been at the forefront of Limerick County Council's approach.

Limerick County Council never viewed this matter as "City versus County" as both are interdependent from an economic, social, cultural and sporting perspective.

The County Council pledges to work with all local, regional and national interests to achieve the ultimate goal of delivering a better Limerick for all its citizens.

A full statement will issue when the Council has had an opportunity to consider the Report in detail.

Clare County Council reaction

Clare County Council has this evening received the report of the Limerick Local Government Committee.

A specially convened meeting of the Council, which will be facilitated by the Mayor of Clare Councillor Christy Curtin, will take place at Aras Contae An Chlir, Ennis, Co Clare, next week to discuss matters raised in the report.

The Council will not be issuing its response to the report until such time as the Elected Members have been given an opportunity to consider its recommendations and conclusions.

Shannon Development reaction

Shannon Development is calling for the implementation of the recommendations of the Report launched today by the Limerick Local Government Committee on "Renewing Local Government in Limerick."

Welcoming the report's recommendations Dr. Vincent Cunnane, Chief Executive, Shannon Development said:

"It is critical that the recommendations of this report be acted on as quickly as possible. Shannon Development's main recommendation to the Limerick Local Government Committee was that the Limerick City boundary needs to be extended to ensure a larger and stronger Limerick City with the necessary scale and resource base to drive the economic development of the Limerick/Shannon Gateway.

"We also recommended that there should be one governing organisation with responsibility for Limerick City and County as the optimal structure to manage a Greater Limerick Area with a stronger city at its core. These views have been endorsed by the Committee.

"We are pleased to note that the Limerick Local Government Committee has made these two of its key recommendations, and we view their implementation as a key factor in regenerating Limerick as the region's driver of economic growth. In our submission to, and meeting with, the Limerick Local Government Committee, we emphasised that the long term economic development of the Limerick/Shannon Gateway, driven by a strong Limerick City, is vital to the Shannon Region's future."

Highlighting how implementing the Report findings would positively impact the long term development of the area, Dr. Cunnane said, "Shannon Development strongly believes that the long term economic development prospects of the Shannon Region are best served by having Limerick City as a strong, vibrant metropolitan core fulfilling its potential as the economic driving force of the Region over the next twenty to thirty years. We view the recommendations in this report as an important step in achieving that."
