Death of popular Limerick-based journalist Dermot Walsh

POPULAR Limerick author and journalist Dermot Walsh has passed away aged 64 following a battle with cancer.

Mr Walsh, who moved to Limerick in the 1990s, was based in the Ennis Road, and penned a number of books, most notably his acclaimed piece on the killing of Detective Garda Jerry McCabe in 1996, entitled 'To the honour of Jerry McCabe'.

A former Shannon Development press officer, Mr Walsh also published 'Beneath Cannock's Clock', which reopened the case of Michael Manning, the last man murdered in Ireland in the 1950s, for the murder of Limerick nurse Catherine Cooper.

The Wexford native - who also worked with the Irish Press, and the Sunday Independent - had been battling cancer for the last 16 years.

The self confessed "old style" journalist was also the editor of the Clare News and the Wexford People. At the 2010 Meteor Mid-West Press Ball, he was honoured for his contribution to the media.

Mr Walsh is survived by his wife Joyce, children Emmet and Grainne, and parents Joe and Anne.

He will be reposing in Thompson's Funeral Home tomorrow, Sunday, from 5pm, with removal at 7pm to Requiem mass will take place at Our Lady of the Rosary Church on the Ennis Road this Monday morning at 11am, with burial afterwards in Illaunamanagh Cemetery, Shannon.
