Curtins drawn to Templeglantine for clan reunion
THE World Curtin Clan Gathering will be held at The Devon Inn Hotel, Templeglantine, later this month.
The four-day reunion will extend from Thursday evening April 23 to Sunday 26, and hundreds are expected to attend, according to Joanne Linehan, Brosna, who is herself connected to the Curtin name three times in her recent ancestry. She is local host, with Liam Curtin, also of Brosna.
The clan organisation was formed in America some 20 years ago and maintains a genealogical record of links. The clan genealogist, Margaret Curtain, is a resident of Australia. The organisation welcomes anyone interested in the surname Curtin and its history and genealogy.
There have been five general gatherings to date, three held in America and two in Ireland (Mallow and Clare). This is the first time that the gathering has come to the west Limerick, north Kerry, north Cork area.
It is expected that very many local people of the Curtin surname or blood will join the visitors for the occasion. And there will be quite a gathering, with over 50 from America guaranteed to travel, as well as many from other countries, including Australia.
Ms Linehan said that the numbers may be down because of the economic situation, but she is gratified that so many had still chosen to travel
The programme begins on Thursday evening April 23 with early registration and mingling.
Registrations resume at 9am on Friday, with the official welcome at 10am. Throughout the day there will be speakers, local and international, music, and times for mixing/mingling. The day session ends about 5 pm
On Friday evening all are free to mingle. However for those who wish to learn basic steps of Irish dance, lessons are available with Marion Quirke from 9pm in Abbeyfeale.
Saturday 's sessions again has a variety of speakers and presenters in a social atmosphere to about 4.30 pm. Both historian Sr Margaret MacCurtain and folklorist, Eddie Lenihan will be speaking on Saturday afternoon.
Saturday evening sees the official dinner with traditional music and dance to follow.

The events of the weekend conclude that evening back at the hotel.
