Court remands eight Limerick men in custody amid tight security

EIGHT Limerick men were remanded in custody yesterday afternoon after they appeared before the non-jury Special Criminal Court.

The eight men were returned for trial at Limerick District Court last Friday and there was tight security at the Criminal Courts of Justice in Dublin for yesterday's hearing.

Ger Dundon, 24, of Hyde Avenue, Ballinacurra Weston is charged with committing violent disorder at Sarsfield Avenue, Garryowen on February 17 last.

Brothers, Christopher McCormack, 27, of McNamara Terrace, Wolfe Tone St and David McCormack, 25, of Crecora Avenue, Ballinacurra Weston are charged with committing violent disorder at the same location on the same date.

Jimmy Collins, aged 47, of Crecora Avenue and his son Gareth Collins-Keogh, 21, of Hyde Avenue are charged with demanding money with menaces from Mark Heffernan at John Carew Park, on dates between January 29 and February 28, 2009.

The father and son are also charged with threatening to kill or cause serious harm to Mark Heffernan on October 17, 2009 at the Milk Market and with demanding money with menaces on the same date.

Gareth Collins Keogh is also charged with committing violent disorder at Sarsfield Avenue, Garryowen on the February 17 last.

Christopher McCarthy, 27, of Crecora Avenue is charged with threatening to kill or cause serious harm to Mark Heffernan at the Milk Market and with demanding money with menaces on the same date.

Michael Bridgeman, 51, of Glenview, Ballyneety, Co Limerick is charged with threatening to kill or cause serious harm to Mark Heffernan at John Carew Park on a date between January 29, 2009 and February 12, 2010 and with demanding money with menaces.

Patrick Pickford, 19, of Talbot Avenue, Prospect is charged with demanding money with menaces.

Tom O'Connell SC, prosecuting, said that an order had been made by the DPP returning the men for trial to the Special Criminal Court because the ordinary courts were inadequate to secure the administration of justice and he asked that all eight be remanded in custody pending their trial.

The three-judge court granted the applications and all eight men were remanded in custody until October 7 next.
