County Limerick waste company fined after employee loses arm

A COUNTY Limerick waste recycling firm has been €15,000 in relation to a workplace accident during which an employee lost an arm.

Derry White Skip Hire Ltd pleaded guilty to a total of eight breaches of the Safety, Health, and Welfare at Work Act.

Limerick Circuit Court was told that Jason Dunleavy’s left arm was “traumatically amputated” when it got caught in heavy machinery at the company’s recycling plant at Mountplummer, Broadford, Co Limerick on June 23, 2009.

Insp John Kennedy of the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) told the court he conducted an investigation into the incident which happened on June 23, 2009. He said he identified a number of health and safety risks at the facility and he said he was “very dissatisfied” with the safety standards which were in place.

Judge Carroll Moran was told that measures have been taken since to improve health and safety at the recycling facility and that there is “a different picture” at the plant now.

The judge fined Derry White Skip Hire Ltd €15,000 saying it was not a reflection of the value of the injury sustained by Mr Dunleavy.

59-year-old Derry White, a director of the company, was fined €5,000 after he pleaded guilty to similar charges.

Just as i predicted on my comments when that accident happened.Safety Standards WHAT SAFETY STANDARDS. What a joke, they had no regard for there employees and were willing to put there lives at risk.Divided 15000euros by the number of years they have been in business.Well worth the gamble Derry White says to himself and only 5000euros i got caught for.Different picture at the plant now THAT SAYS IT ALL. That picture should have being hanging up when you started up the company.
