Countdown is on as Limerick Women's Mini Marathon gets up to speed

THE countdown is on to this year's Limerick Women's Mini-Marathon, with meet and train sessions taking off across Limerick in preparation for the annual event.

Last year the seven-kilometre run attracted 4,000 competitors from all over Ireland, and up to €500,000 was raised for charity.

This year, all eyes will again be on Limerick runner Rosemary Ryan to see if she can win the race three years in a row.

Her winning time last year was 23 minutes and 17 seconds, with 3,477 women as well as a few men in drag following her to the finishing line in the University of Limerick grounds.

Leas Cathaoirleach of Limerick County Council, Councillor Michael Sheahan said the event is now a major fixture on the local sporting and social calendar.

"This memorable annual occasion is made extra special by the huge funds raised for various charities at local, national and international level," said Cllr Sheahan at the launch of the mini-marathon in Limerick County Hall this Monday.

He praised the organisers and sponsors of the event, which he said would deliver a timely economic boost to the city and county.

"From the registration of participants to the organisation of the race on the day, the extensive work that is carried out has made the event one of the largest and most successful of its kind in Ireland," he said.

This year's event is once again being sponsored by the Limerick Leader, sister newspaper of the Limerick Chronicle, along with Limerick's Live 95FM and the VHI.

The specially convened meet and train sessions - organised by the County Limerick Local Sports Partnership - are aimed at encouraging people to get fit and prepare for the mini-marathon, which takes place around the UL campus on Sunday October 3.

In recent weeks, mini-marathon participants have been gathering in Newcastle West, Abbeyfeale, Athea, Rathkeale, Castletroy and Knocklong to walk and run along the county's Sli Na Slainte routes.

Meet and train sessions for women, hosted by Limerick AC's fitness expert Edel O Shea, are also taking place each week on Monday at 6pm at Shelbourne Park, while the Fit4Life group meets outside the Ambassador Dry Cleaners in Raheen on Fridays at 6pm.
