Councillors have called for bottle banks in East Limerick to be emptied more frequently
COuNCILLORS called for bottle banks in East Limerick to be emptied regularly at a local area meeting.
Cllr Noel Gleeson said there was an “ongoing problem” with the recycling bank in Cappamore.
“There is only a small one in Cappamore. Only for the FAS in the village it would be a disgrace. It’s an ongoing problem. It’s not co-ordinated” said Cllr Gleeson.
Cllr John Egan said it was the same situation in Murroe.
“When people bring bottles they don’t expect to have to bring them home again because they are full. People in Murroe-Boher are very good to recycle and they need to be regularly emptied,” said Cllr Egan.
Cllr Brid Teefy said it was the exact same issue in Caherline.
“People are understandably annoyed when they go to the trouble of recycling and they find the banks full. They have to bring them home again and take them back another time,” said Cllr Teefy.
She also noted that a very small few just dump the bags there even if the bottle banks are empty.
“It’s amazing after they bring them just to leave them there,” said Cllr Teefy, who broadened the debate on to dumping in general.
“It costs Limerick County Council a huge amount of money every year to clean up litter. For example a three piece suite has been dumped at the entrance to Killeen quarry in Ballybricken. Somebody is going to have to come out and take that away. And that is just one example, there is a lot of fly tipping going on.
“It was an occasional dumping spot as it is on a quiet rural road but the local community have organised clean-ups. The money spent on cleaning up dumping would be much better spent on roads, footpaths, lighting etc” said Cllr Teefy.
Cllr Eddie Wade, who once discovered a dead horse left on a road, said “the dumping that is going on is crazy”.
Regarding the emptying of bottle banks, a spokesperson for Limerick County Council said the company that bought Mr Binman, Valcroft and trade under the Mr Binman name, now operate the bottle bank servicing contract.
“Their lorry servicing the bottle banks broke down on Thursday, September 6 which resulted in a number of the facilities on Thursday’s route not being covered,” said the spokesperson.
They expected everything to be back on track by the end of last week.
